February Is National Childrens’ Health Month

The entire month of February is dedicated to raising awareness to children’s dental health issues. As many of us are aware of the importance of regular brushing, many are not aware of the severe health risks that are associated with poor dental health. Health issues such as periodontal disease, heart, liver and kidney problems are just a few. Poor oral care has also been linked to shortened lifespans.

The ADA recommends that children be seen by a licensed dentist no later then their first birthday or earlier if the child is teething. Starting children off on a good oral routine at an early age not only helps to prevent health issues, it builds positive dental experiences. The number one reason most adults avoid the dentist is anxiety.

February is the perfect time to schedule a dental examination. Your family or pediatric dentist will evaluated your child’s mouth for habits such as thumb or finger sucking, jaw development, mouth breathing issues and cavities. Your child will also receive a cleaning, x-rays, fluoride as well as proper brushing instructions.

Simple changes to a child’s diet can make a big difference. Choose water or milk over sugary sodas. Avoid sports drinks as well as fruit juices to help cut the risk of cavities. Eating fruits and vegetables verses candies or cookies for a snack not only help with oral health but promote good overall health. Creating a brushing chart for small children helps make brushing fun!

Dr. Straffon’s has a passion for educating children on proper oral hygiene, so once again this year he is proud to offer brushing seminars to local grade schools. If you would like the Straffon Team to visit your child’s school, please contact Wendy at our practice to learn more.

Annual Holiday Food Drive

 Annual  Holiday Food Drive-

The holiday season is once again upon us, trees lit by sparkling lights, fluffy snowflakes falling from the sky, carolers singing songs that remind us of our childhood. We gather with family and friends to celebrate the season with lavish meals and sweet treats. Now imagine…being a child not knowing where you’ll find your next meal. It is a sad but true reality for a large number of children in Colorado. Many people are not aware that one in seven Coloradans worry where they will find their next meal & nearly half are children.

This is why Straffon Orthodontics has once again teamed up with the Food Bank of the Rockies for our annual food drive. We are reaching out to our patients, professional associates, family and friends by asking them to help by donating non-perishable food items during the month of December.

Donations will be accepted from December 1st through December 23rd (until noon) during regular business hours. It is the season to give and what a better way to fill your heart with joy then to know you helped feed a family in need over the holidays.

The Food Bank of the Rockies provides food to more than 411, 000 people annually and Straffon Orthodontics is proud to do our part in stopping hunger and feeding hope!

Dr. Straffon & Team, wish everyone a wonderful and healthy holiday season!

ALS Ice Bucket Challenge

On August 22nd Straffon Orthodontics took part in the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge. We were excited to be joined by our families and awesome patients for this wonderful cause. The water was super cold but we all would all be happy to do it again. For those of you that were not able to attend, don’t worry, you can watch the video below.

With all the internet buzz about the challenge, many people don’t really know what ALS is or how the association works.

ALS, was thrust into the national spotlight for the first time nearly 74 years ago by Major League Baseball Hall of Fame legend Lou Gehrig following his New Your Yankee’s farewell speech. Lou Gehrig publicly battled the disease which now bears his name throughout his career, by doing so he helped spotlight a disease that back then had very little treatments.

(ALS) Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis causes muscle weakness throughout the body. As the weakening and paralysis continue to spread to the muscles of the trunk of the body the disease, eventually affects speech, swallowing, chewing and breathing. When the breathing muscles become affected, ultimately, the patient will need permanent ventilator support in order to survive.

The ALS Association is a non-profit organization dedicated to global research programs focused on the treatment and a cure for Lou Gehrig’s Disease. The association also provides a network of care services to assist people with ALS and their families throughout the nation.

To date the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge has raise over $113.3 MILLON dollars in donations!

Straffon Orthodontics was proud to help raise awareness and donate to such a great cause. For more information on ALS and where you can donate, please visit
